Cooking up some last-minute holiday gifts

Sometimes the best gifts are the ones you make yourself

You know the sick feeling that you get when someone unexpectedly hands you a gift, and you completely forgot to buy something for that person? Here’s my advice: Don’t run out to the store; run to the kitchen instead.

Food gifts are great at the last minute, because they seem so personal, yet they’re truly one-size-fits-all. Plus, you don’t have to worry about buying just the right amount. Just find a recipe that you love, make up a big batch, and you’re good to go. If you have some leftovers, you can spread some unexpected holiday cheer … or just indulge your own sweet tooth.

To me, the perfect food gifts are pretty, portable and (probably) sweet. For the most part, cakes and pies are out, because they’re hard to wrap and transport. I like to give finger foods that can be apportioned according to the recipient — more for big families, less for my single friends.

The packaging is important, but it’s also fun. Walk into Michael’s or Hobby Lobby at this time of year, and you’ll be amazed at the selection of colored cellophane wrap, printed bags, and decorative tins. Pick your recipe, pick your packaging, and you’re ready for any holiday emergency. Here are few ideas to get you started:

Cookies are always a big hit, and these gingerbread kiss cookies are spiced with all the flavors of the season. Besides the big chocolate kiss right in the middle, there’s also gingerbread, nutmeg, cinnamon and molasses. (Cinnamon Spice & Everything Nice)

You know those candied nuts you can buy at the mall? Here’s a recipe for candied almonds that’s about 1/3 the price — and much more personal, because you made it yourself. With just 10 minutes of prep time, you can whip up a big batch and be ready for anything. (Budget Bytes)

Quick, can you name a sweet, addictive holiday gift with only 3 ingredients? If you said white chocolate peppermint popcorn bark, then I guess it’s true that great minds think alike. You just pop some popcorn, sprinkle bits of candy cane on top, then drizzle with melted white chocolate and pop in the fridge. If you can think of anything easier than that, please let me know! (Mommy Hates Cooking)

I know I said that cakes are generally out as a last-minute holiday gift, but here’s one that breaks the rule, because it’s totally portable. Whip up this molten orange chocolate lava cake in a jar, wrap it up with a ribbon or a bow, and you’re good to go — literally. (Food for My Family)

Finally, I had to share this candy sleigh because it’s so clever and simple. Just choose your favorite candy bars, pile them on a couple of candy cane “runners,” and tie it together with some ribbon. You never even turn on the stove for this “recipe”! (Butteryum)

That’s it for this week. Happy gifting!
